Want to install a new ROM on your rooted Galaxy Nexus?  Or you might want to switch back and forth between several different ROMs?

If you’ve answered yes to any of the questions above, you will want to learn how to backup/restore ROM on your rooted Galaxy Nexus.

Before we begin, you will need a rooted Galaxy Nexus and also install ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone.

Step 1. First, lets turn off your Galaxy Nexus then boot into Fastboot by holding down Volume Up, Volume Down, and Power button together.  Then hit Volume Down button twice and Power button to enter ClockworkMod Recovery.

Step 2. Once in ClockworkMod Recovery, select “backup and restore” using Volume buttons then hit Power button to select.

Step 3. Select “backup” and hit Power button, this will begin the back up process.

Step 4. When backup is finished, you are done!

Anytime you want to restore your backups, simply go into “backup and restore” menu.

Step 5. Choose “restore”.

Step 6. Here, you can choose the backup you want to restore, it will be timestamped.

Step 7. If you want to change the backup folder names to something more memorable, boot into your phone then install “ES File Explorer” app from the Market.

Step 8. Choose “clockworkmod” directory in ES File Explorer app.

Step 9. Choose “backup”.

Step 10. Here you will see all of your backed up ROMs.  You can also copy these folders to your hard disk for additional backup or to free up space.

Step 11. Do a long-press on the folder you want to rename and choose “Rename”.

Step 12. I’ve added “stockroot” to the timestamp to let me know that this backup is my rooted stock ROM.

Step 13. By making at least one backup of your rooted stock ROM, it makes your life easier when something goes wrong such as you ending up in a bootloop after a ROM install.  So, don’t forget to make at least one backup of your rooted stock ROM before flashing new ROMs!

Does this let me jump from rom to rom with just going through the CWM recovery?

Example: if I backed up my stock root rom, and then later installed foxhound (back this one up as well), than again install Villain rom (backed up as well), I can just enter recovery mode and choose any of my backups?
If so, do I need to wipe dalvik cache, wipe factory, and clear data/cache?

PS: If I needed to restore my original rom and un-root, how would I go about doing that? Would I need to some how lock the boot loader? and remove super user? Do you have a video tutorial for this?

    Thanks again!

Hi guys, I replaced the modded original wpa_supplicant file from Xda-developers in attempt to connect ad-hoc network, but somehow it’s not working. I forgot to backup the original one (system/bin) so I can’t get wifi on my Galaxy Nexus. Can any one share that file for me?
    Thanks in advance!

I have a stock verizon nexus running ICS and wanted to perform a backup by booting into Fastboot by holding down Volume Up, Volume Down, and Power button together. I then hit Volume Down button twice and Power button to enter ClockworkMod Recovery and get the Android with a red exclamation mark. Am I doing something wrong? I want to backup everything before I get started.

  8. Richard says:

So I got stuck in a bootloop while flashing Jelly Beans, I booted back into CWMR, but every backup and nandroid I tried to flash would also get stuck in a bootloop. I’m starting to panic does anyone have any idea what to do next. P.S. I also rooted using wugfresh and that is unresponsive also when trying to flash back.

    • Max Lee says:

Not sure but it could be wugfresh related, but you can try reflashing fresh CWM with ROM Manager first and try installing a rom to get your phone working again.

      • Richard says:

I can boot into CWMR but no matter how much I wipe or reflash (stock, JB, or AOKP) it just gets caught in a boot loop.
