Android 4.4.3 is finally HERE and for those of you who have a rooted Galaxy Nexus, you will be able to experience the best of the latest Android OS with custom ROMs.

For this week, check out Shiny ROM, which is 99% stock ROM with Chrome browser and restart menu added.  This is going to be nearly identical to what would a stock firmware look like if Google released Android 4.4.3 for Galaxy Nexus.

Shiny ROM is available for GSM or Verizon Galaxy Nexus but if you have Sprint Galaxy Nexus, you can try AOSB or CrDroid ROM, which are also Android 4.4.3.

Overall, Android 4.4.3 brings a ton of improvements under the hood, which makes your Galaxy Nexus better than ever with the latest Google Camera along with excellent battery life and smooth performance.

If you have been putting off on updating your Galaxy Nexus, definitely try a fresh restart with Android 4.4.3 and make your phone anew!

  1. eric says:

will I be ok if I flash from 4.3?

    • Max Lee says:

      yes of course!

      • Eric says:

thanks but I already goofed up. I flashed w/o updating the recovery mod and it gave me the status 7 error. What’s worse is that my backup did not backup properly. It says MD5 mismatch and my phone is now stuck in recovery w/o a flashable rom. Is there any way to update the recovery mod w/o going into the phone and enabling USB debugging mode? or is there any way i can access the phone from the PC so that i can transfer a rom into it?

        • eric says:

got it to work using a toolkit. lesson learned, update recovery!

          • Glen says:

What toolkit did you use? I have the same problem as you had.

            Thanks,

            • eric says:

Nexus Root Toolkit by Wugfresh. I tried other toolkits and other methods but was the best one that got back up and running.

              here’s what i did:

do the initial setup of installing the drivers. follow the instructions. get as far as you can with those.

              the process:
Flash Stock + Unroot (select soft-brick/bootloop)
when done I did a OEM lock
              after that select Unlock
              make backup
              then Root w/ custom recovery

all of those processes will take a few minutes

also I flash stock+unroot the first time and it failed so i had to to a force flash. you will see that all in the instructions if that happens to you. make sure you read all the instructions.

once you are rooted, go to the advanced utilities and flash the clockworkmod 6.0.4.7. then you can flash the kitkat rom posted on this site.

my OS is 4.4.3 work in y device gapps 4.4.4?

  2. Bill S says:

You do not have to download Gapps with Shiny. They are already included.

  3. BartHD2 says:

Tried it with & and without. Seems to be working better without. Has more ‘apps’ pre-installed. I noticed in CWM while loading the PA_Gapps it removed some and said i’d have to redo some from the play store. Either way I think it works great so far.

  4. rapbueno says:

can i run custom kernels in this rom like mpokang or fancy kernel?

  5. Lucas says:

    Hey guys!

Installed the ROM a few hours earlier today, almost all seems to be working fine so far, except incoming calls… I can dial and talk, no problem, but when people call me, they get a busy number message.

Anyone else has experienced the same issue?

  6. Lucas says:

oh, also, if i press power buttom, it does not lock the screen. Locking options only apply when I power the device on.

  7. Vivian says:

This works perfectly on my nexus. At first I encountered an error but it was fixed right after i updated my CWM version. Loving 4.4.3 so far. Can’t seem to encounter any glitches yet.. power button can lock the screen just fine, incoming calls work just fine. However there isn’t an emoji function on the keyboard. I can see the coloured emojis posted by other people though..

Anyway thanks for this post and amazing tutorials! I am a newbie in rooting as well as installing custom roms but you made them so easy to learn! 🙂

  8. Lucas says:

    Hey guys!

Re-installed the ROM, but not with the Gapps and now it works fine!

I’m specially impressed with the Hangouts, it’s been great texting with it. The hotkey “Ok Google” is also something else. Make phone calls, accurate google search and even send text messages.

Still a little disappointed with battery life.
But so, far, loving Android 4.4.3 🙂

Question: anyone knows which runtime suits best? I’ve using Dalvik. Anyone suggests going for Art?

  9. Phil says:

I seem to have an issue with the GPS & the location service not properly updating. When I open any mapping program it seems to have cached the last location. Anyone else having the same problem?

    • Lucas says:

So far, mine has been working fine. It also works when say “ok google, drive me to xxxx”.

Waze also works, but the location has to be set as high accuracy to give the correct directions.

  10. Siddu says:

Able to flash shiny custom ROM 4.4.3 Gapps on galaxy nexus successfully.
After one week it entered into boot loop(Dont know which app caused this).
I tried safe mode, factory reset, cache deletion, flash_unroot etc..
No success. Data wiping is not at all happening. Completely screwed up now.
Your reply/suggestion may help me to re use the galaxy nexus 🙂

    • Max Lee says:

Did u try formatting /system and reinstall rom?

      • Siddu says:

Yes, I tried all. I formatted cache, /system, data n all. It gives message as formatted. When I restart the mobile, same 4.4.3 OS gets loaded and it enters the boot loop. I tried to install default image.. That also not happening.. 🙁

        • Max Lee says:

No error messages? What version of cwm are you using?

          • Siddu says:

            No error messages.
I have used three recoveries like, twrp, cwm and Philz but no success.
            TWRP: 2.7.1.0
            CWM: 6.0.4.7
            PHILZ: 6.19.3

I think one of the partition has been corrupted. And parted binary whatever I have works only for ext2 file system. Filesystem created on my mobile is ext4. How to solve this?

            • Max Lee says:

Never had that kind of problem but you can try unrooting back with stock firmware, that should clear everthing.

              • Siddu says:

Any particular procedure to unroot using stock firmware? I tried to unroot using galaxy nexus root toolkit but it didn’t happen. I asked in Service centre and they are telling that baseband IC corrupted. What does it mean? Rooting and upgrading to KitKat corrupts the baseband IC?

  11. debashis hira says:

Its stable and I’m getting the stock android feel of 4.4.3 and its awesome have been on for like a week now.
    Thanks for the updates Max

So now my mobile is now without os and while switching on the mobile only google logo comes and there is nothing in the phone storage.please help me………….

  13. sai pramodh says:

while installing i got fist a warning and after sometime installation aborted and got error messages.

    Warning: No file_contexts

    set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed

  14. Siddu says:

Anybody knows how to get rid of write protect mode?
I have galaxy nexus i9250 and it went to write protect mode. I am unable to do anything on the sdcard. If i delete/write anything on the card, it reboots. I can make the calls only. Please help.

  15. Robert says:

Shiny is great so far, haven’t found anything I don’t like and everything seems to be working as it should. One question… Since this is 4.4.3, I still don’t see Tap and Pay in Google Wallet. Can someone confirm? I really miss this NFC feature. Thanks all.
